TOURNAMENT RULES
2-person Team Scramble
This is a two-person team event.
Each team must use 3 tee shots from each player.
Each player on the team will tee off at each hole. One of the resulting balls will then be chosen, and each player on that team will hit their second ball from the chosen spot, dropping within a club length and no closer to the hole.
Play the preferred ball after every shot pair from tee to hole. Play continues as above, with each player hitting from the selected spot, then choosing the best next ball, until a putt is holed.
Exception: Once the ball has reached the green, the drop distance must be 6 inches or less for putts.
There will be no “gimmees” – all holes must be finished with the ball putted into the hole.
There will be no mulligans.
Record only the team score, that is, the number of shots from the tee to the hole after choosing each “best” ball. Do not record individual player scores. (See sample scorecard below.)

Modified Stableford (Putting)
Question: Do you ever watch the celebrity tournament held in July at Lake Tahoe every year? It’s called
the American Century Championship Golf tournament. It features a host of celebrities and former athletes playing a format called Stableford (likely named after some guy who invented it being named Stableford). Instead of counting strokes, it uses a points system for scoring: 6 points for an eagle, 3 points for a birdie, 1 for par, zero for bogie—and here’s where it gets useful for folks like us—anything worse than a bogie scores only -2. So, for those of us who are constantly chasing par, even the double and triple bogies all count the same.
But, for our contest, you needn’t worry about all those negative numbers piling up on your scorecard. We’ll be playing a modifiedStableford format. You’ll score points for putts instead of pars. And . . . there will be no negative points!
Winners? Of course, we’ll have winners. The highest point totals over the round will win cash prizes. Here are the simple rules:
- A $2 entry is required for each player. If you decide not to contribute, you won’t be eligible for prizes. Still, you’re welcome to come out and play for the fun of it, and for the social interaction.
- Golfers will play a normal round of casual stroke golf.
- Once on the green, players will track the number of putts they take to finish each hole and enter that number on the “# putts” line on the scorecard for that hole. Do not fill in the ‘points” line.
- Final score calculations will be done by league officials after the round is completed.
- For each hole, the following points will be awarded (entered post-round by a league official):
- Zero putts (made shot from somewhere off the green!) = 5 points
- One putt = 3 points
- Two putts = 1 point
- Three or more putts = 0 points (no negative points!)
- Winners will be based on the highest number of total points for the round.
- The tie breaker will follow the same sequence as our tournament tie breaker, that is, starting with the hardest handicap hole and working down to the least hard (so, the first tie breaker is the fewest putts on #16, then #13, #14, etc.)
- Payout of the full $2 kitty will go to the winners (the club won't take half)
As a reminder, even if you use your putter from off the green, it’s not a putt. Count a putt only after your ball is on the green. Also, if you make it in from off the green, be sure to count as 0 (zero) putts (points!).
Tee times for these events will use a staggered start, with a 9:00 or 10:00 AM tee time (depending on the month) on hole #10 for the first group. Succeeding groups will tee off in 10-minute increments. Each golfer will get a scorecard noting their tee time. The top line will be used to post the score for each hole as normally done. There will be two additional lines: one to enter the number of putts taken for each hole, and one to calculate the corresponding points for the putts. The last line will be filled in by Club officials.

Sample scorecard for Modified Putting Contest
Verify the start time on your scorecard against the one indicated in Monday’s pairing email.
The $2 Contest: There will be no singular hole for the $2 contest. The entire $2 pot will go to the winners of the modified Stableford putting event.
Basic 2-3-4 Mashup
This is a 2-person team game. EACH TEAM MUST USE A MINIMUM OF 3 TEE SHOTS PER PLAYER.
Players may choose their partners and request them prior to the event using the normal RSVP methods. Players registering as singles will be assigned a partner from the pool of other singles.
Team's will be assigned a handicap using GHIN handicaps and based on the following formula:
60% of the lower handicap + 40% of the higher handicap = Team handicap
The event requires switching the game after a certain number of holes, as follows:
On holes 10 and 11, normal stroke play: each player plays their own ball all the way to the hole. Both player’s scores are entered onto the scorecard on their individual score lines.
On holes 12, 13 and 14, Shamble rules: each player tees off from their normal tees. The team selects the best ball, then each plays their own ball in to the hole from that spot. Both player’s scores are entered onto the scorecard on their individual scorelines.
On holes 15, 16, 17 and 18, 2-person team scramble: Select the best ball after the tee shots. Both teammates hit from there. Select the best second shot, both hit from there, etc., until the ball is holed. That score goes on the scorecard on the team scoreline.
Scoring (done by league officials):
- The lowest score for each hole on the individual score lines will be circled and used as the team score for those holes (#10 through #14)
- The team score will be used for holes #15 through #18.
- The team scores for each hole will be totaled to find the gross score.
- The team's handicap will be subtracted from the gross score to get the team's final net score.
For this contest, GHIN handicaps will be used (easier math, and our Play Coordinator’s calculator is broken). There will be a 10-stroke maximum separation from the lowest and highest handicaps for the team. The final team scores will be figured using the team handicap, which will be developed from our usual calculation. The team’s net score is the gross team score less the determined team handicap.

2-3-4 Mashup Using B-W-R Tees
It’s yet another 2-person team game. (Don’t we love cultivating trusting relationships among our golf partners?) EACH TEAM MUST USE A MINIMUM OF 3 TEE SHOTS PER PLAYER.
As for the rules, basically, we will switch the game after a certain number of holes, as follows:
On holes 10 and 11, normal stroke play: each player plays their own ball from their normal tees (men=white, women=red) all the way to the hole. Both player’s scores are entered onto the scorecard on their individual scorelines. The lowest score for the hole goes on the team line. (See example below.)
On holes 12, 13 and 14, Shamble rules: each player tees off from their normal tees. The team selects the best ball, then each plays their own ball in to the hole from that spot. Both player’s scores are entered onto the scorecard on their individual scorelines. The lowest score for the hole goes on the team line.
On holes 15, 16, 17 and 18, 2-person team scramble: Select the best ball after the tee shots. Both teammates hit from there. Select the best second shot, both hit from there, etc., until the ball is holed. That score goes on the scorecard on the team scoreline.

2-3-4 Scorecard Blank
Chapman Format
(This game is also known locally as "Deb's Hit, Switch and Bitch!")
NOTE: This is not a scramble tournament!
Basic Rules:
- Team members are assigned in twos.
- All four players in the group hit their tee shots.
- Players then play their partner's ball on their second shots. (Johnny hits Max’s ball, Max hits Johnny’s.)
- After the second shot, players choose the best one, and the player whose ball is not chosen takes the third shot from the selected spot.
- Starting with the third stroke of the hole, team members hit every other shot until the ball is holed (Alternate Shot), with the final putt resulting in the team score.
Game play proceeds as follows:
1. Tee Off: Both players on the team start by teeing off. Each player hits their own ball from the tee.
2. Switch Balls: After the tee shots, players switch balls. Each golfer hits the other player’s ball for their second shot.
3. Select the Best Ball: Once the second shots are complete, the team evaluates both positions and selects the better of the two. This chosen ball becomes the one they will use to finish the hole.
4. Alternate Shots to Hole Out: From the location of the selected ball, players take alternate shots to complete the hole. If Player B’s second shot is chosen, Player A takes the third shot, and they continue alternating until the ball is holed.
Example Scenario:

Suggestion: Before you tee off on the first hole, make sure your partner knows which ball you're playing (Titleist 3, Calloway 4, etc.) and its color. That way, when partners switch balls for the second shot, your partner will know that they are hitting the correct one. Plan on updating them if you change balls or lose one and have to replace it. Hitting the wrong ball incurs a two-stroke penalty.
